A SPECIAL ETHICAL OFFER FOR BUSINESSES ON WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOUR

A SPECIAL ETHICAL OFFER FOR BUSINESSES ON WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOUR

A recently released report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNICEF shows that the number of children in child labour has risen to 160 million worldwide. This is the first time that child labour numbers have increased in over 20 years.

It’s a massive backward step. Especially as today is World Day Against Child Labour!

Sadly, child and exploitive adult labour is all around us. Deeply hidden away in the tens of thousands of supply chains worldwide. And it’s ironic that many of the western businesses that have thrived during the pandemic, especially online retailers, are generally the ones using supply chains that are highly questionable. Supply chains in developing countries that have deteriorated even further ethically over the past 12 months where workers and their families have become more vulnerable and poverty stricken due to Covid-19.

Big Western organisations can ‘Green Wash’ all they like with their savvy marketing to lead consumers astray, yet these are the facts. A great example of big business Green Washing is the number of businesses that have given themselves a pat on the back for uploading their Modern Slavery Statements to the Australian Governments Online Register. Yet words are not the same as action. And setting 10 / 20 / 30 year deadlines for tidying up horribly exploitive, poverty driven supply chains in our view is a cop out and all part of the green washing process. RREPP is presently putting together our own Modern Slavery Statement. Yet the big distinction between us and others is that we are already doing what others are ‘proposing’ to do in 20 - 30 years’ time. If big companies are taking action now to improve the ethics of their supply chains, why is child labour in just as worse a state as it was 20 years ago ?

Unfortunately, as consumers, our constant demand for cheap doesn’t help matters. It's often why ethical businesses struggle so much. Producing a sustainable high-quality product from ethical supply chains of course costs a little more. The paradox though is that people often find themselves buying two cheap poorly made unethical products that fall apart quickly, when for the same price they could have bought one ethically made higher quality product, that also helps the more vulnerable of our global citizens work their way out of poverty. Such a purchasing philosophy is also less damaging on the environment. Less will always be more when it comes to ethical purchasing & sustainability.
